Post #5 Alaskan Vacation.. College Fjord

It's 3:45am and I've not slept but a few hours til 11pm .. so at 2am I got up, and hit the treadmill for the start of the day, had breakfast and decided to blog while I use my headphones to the TV and watch a DVR show.

Today's blog is going to be about the time where we had our last couple of days sailing, seafood bars, pastry bars, the 2nd formal night at dinner on Thursday. Also completing the glacier days of sailing into the College Fjords at the end of the day on Friday where we stood glued to our balcony as the Naturalist Rachael Dunham talked us through it with the sound of her voice on our tvs. We could have stood on the outdoor balconies with the throngs and heard her voice on the speakers, but we all enjoyed our adjoining balconies. She gave us names of the glaciers, history of who explored them and yet without using my information or googling it, I can't recall. but I have pictures that are terrific for putting you and I back into the moment. All of the Glaciers do have names, based on who might have explored them, fought for the protection of them or was a name of a school in the East United States. So I googled the glaciers and here is the list of them.
  • Amherst Glacier
  • Baby Glacier (Alaska)
  • Barnard Glacier
  • Bryn Mawr Glacier
  • Crescent Glacier (Alaska)
  • Downer Glacier
  • Harvard Glacier
  • Holyoke Glacier
  • Smith Glacier (Alaska)
  • Vassar Glacier
  • Wellesley Glacier
  • Williams Glacier
  • Yale Glacier

  • One of the regular sights, us being in a food line. Today's line was the "taste of Alaska" and a seafood buffet. One of our favorites as we are into fish.  There was also a pastry day after the tour of the galley.. Good stuff.

As we sailed from Glacier Bay in the morning to College Fjord in the evening (it's a culdesac that you go into and then turn around and come back out the same way)

When we left Glacier Bay the National Park Rangers came in the morning and left in the afternoon the same way, climbing a ladder from this boat onto the ship.. don't slip~!  this picture could have gone into yesterdays set of pictures.

2nd formal night, Patty was the only one missing as she wasn't feeling well.

Baked Alaska and one of our table stewards "Ute" from the Philipians (sp?)

Sunset, alot of clouds kept it from being spectacular and a bit shrouded mostly

    The College Fjord glaciers begin

our playful sea otter showing off by being up close to the boat

Icebergs were a dime a dozen and some where huge and right next to the ship

this is a lot of waterfalls

a receding glacier that is shrinking back up the mountain..

love the sun peeking through behind the shroud of clouds.

Isidro our room steward, took excellent care of us all week and our room was always clean as soon as we walked out of it.  Loved that!

It looked as though the front of the ship was going to ram into the end of the culdesac and the last Glacier..  we then headed up to the deck and looked from up there.

the next two are an ice chunk that was huge and we just sailed right past it
close up of the same iceberg

Every Glacier has an "outlet" where the torrents of water escape in order to relieve pressure. you could see the river current running out of it clearly.

this is a Princess boat they unloaded to take "more" pictures from the water of the people standing on the decks and of the ship up close to the glacier. This was the closest they could get all season with the iceberg flows being so much more manageable for cruising.

This glacier on the return cruising out of the culdesac looks like a ski slope

    Jack, Char and Kimm

borrowed this picture from Char of her sea otters on the thingy!
